Enraged with Congress leader PC Sharma’s statement comparing ‘kurbani’ (sacrifice) on Eid with severing of Lord Ganesha’s head, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists staged a protest in Bhopal and tried to march towards the residence of the Congress leader.

They wanted to gift burqa and skull caps to the Congress leader.

Having prior information about their protest, Youth Congress workers assembled at Sharma’s residence with batons.

When half a dozen activists reached near Habibganj, a scuffle broke out. The Congress workers chased away the activists and allegedly roughed them up. Following this, a number of Bajrang Dal activists including some VHP leaders assembled near Sharma’s residence in Habibganj and tried to march towards it.

In the meantime, the police were deployed around Sharma’s residence and the sub-divisional magistrate reached the spot. The police, using barricades, prevented the activists from going forward.

There was a ruckus in the area for nearly half an hour, with sloganeering on both sides. The activists shouted slogans against the Congress leader, demanding action against him for making a religiously sensitive statement while the Congress workers shouted slogans in favour of Sharma.

Bajrang Dal Bhopal division convener Lokendra Malwiya said most of the protesters went to the Habibganj police station to lodge a complaint. “The Youth Congress workers misbehaved with two Bajrang Dal activists and used abusive language. We lodged a complaint against the Congress for this,” he said.

Shahjahanabad town inspector Narendra Singh Thakur said a complaint was lodged by a Bajrang Dal member Mohan Kushwah against PC Sharma for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. “No FIR has been lodged yet, but we are investigating the matter,” he said.

Sharma said it was wrong on the part of the Bajrang Dal activists to march towards his residence. “If they had a problem with my statement, they should have approached the higher authorities or the police. Why come like this to my house. My supporters were worried about my safety and they assembled at my house,” he said, adding, “I am also lodging a complaint against the Bajrang Dal activists who created a ruckus.”

What Sharma had said

“Ganesh parva chal raha hai…yeh ek Ganga Jamuna tehzeeb hai iss desh ke. Aur Ganesh ji mai be kurbani ka ek sabak hai. Ganesh ji ka jab sarr alag huva tha tou haathi ka sar lagaya tha tou…us samay be…. sab se poojney huvey …tou yeh kurbani ka ek mahatva hai..chahey woh hindu sanskriti ho..muslim sankriti ho…ya duniya ke koyi sankriti ho ..uss mai iska bahut ooncha sthan ha…iss kurbani wali Eid …ispar main sabi bhai aur behno ko…bhopal ke ..pradesh ke ..bahut bahut mubarqbaad de ta hoon…”

(Ganesh festival is on… we have a Ganga Jamuna civilization in this country …and there is a lesson in Ganesha’s sacrifice also…when Ganesha’s head was severed, an elephant head was put on his body.. this made him so revered …so sacrifice has its own significance, whether it is Hindi culture, Muslim culture or any culture in the world…it (sacrifice) has a very high significance …so on this Kurbani wali Eid ..i want to wish all brothers and sisters of Bhopal and the state …”)
