The three accused, who were arrested by MP Nagar police in Bhopal in connection with the rape of a woman in a moving bus late on the night of September 16, were produced in court and remanded to police custody for one day.

The police on Thursday night arrested the third accused, Vivek Shrivastava alias Raju, a resident of Shankar Nagar under Chhola police station, who was on the run since the incident. Shrivastava, a bus driver by profession, was on duty during the day and was to have left after being relieved by Salman Khan, but was with the other two accused when the alleged rape took place.

Town inspector (TI) of MP Nagar police station, Rajkumar Sharaf, said, “We have to recover the clothes the accused were wearing during the crime and also verify their driving licenses.” He added that the accused were being interrogated to ascertain if they had a criminal back ground.

On Wednesday night, a 43-year-old woman boarded the bus at Nadara bus stand and was allegedly raped by the conductor in the moving bus. Other than the victim, conductor Deepak Sharma, 28; driver Salman Khan, 22; and driver Vivek Shrivastava, 28, were in the bus when the incident occurred.

The victim was supposed to alight at Pul Bogada but Salman Khan didn’t stop the bus and sped towards Maida Mill instead. According to the victim’s complaint, Deepak Sharma then raped her in the moving vehicle. The woman later managed to escape near Income Tax Office.

Surprisingly, there are two police check points between Pul Bogada and the Income Tax Office - one at Pul Bogada and the other at Jahengirabad tri-section - but the bus was not stopped or checked at either one.

However, the police deny any laxity and say the incident took place near Maida Mill. “The incident occurred after the bus passed through both check points. The police personnel were deployed at both check points and they didn’t hear any shout or notice any suspicious activity inside the bus,” said SP South Anshuman Singh.
