In a novel protest, Youth Congress (YC) activists on Wednesday handed over a certificate to the mayor for 'letting the mosquitoes spread dengue' in the state capital. They staged a demonstration at the BMC headquarters at Sadar Manzil.
The certificate mentions that 'machchhar mahasangh' (mosquito union) is giving the mayor Krishna Gaur the certificate because the civic body is allowing them (mosquitoes) to breed freely in Bhopal, bite the citizens, and spread dengue, which is causing deaths.
Led by YC leader Monu Saxena, the activists reached Sadar Manzil, the headquarters of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC). However, the gates of the BMC were shut, as officials saw the arrival of the activists. The YC activists raised slogans and put up the big certificate on the front wall of the building.
"We are giving you the status of 'Dengue Mayor'," read the certificate which carried photographs of mosquitoes and the name of 'Machchhar Mahasangh' below.
"We couldn't meet the mayor, but handed over a copy of the certificate to a BMC employee to hand it over to the mayor," said Saxena. As many as ten persons including women and children have died because of dengue in the state capital in the recent days.
The Congress has accused the BMC administration of apathy, and failure to control the mosquito menace. Wednesday's protest was part of the YC agitation on the issue.
