Right on the heels of the incident where a three-monthold unwanted baby girl was battered by her father in Bangalore, police arrested a grocery shop owner for allegedly killing his newborn baby girl by feeding her tobacco mixture (gutkha) in Gwalior, 450-km north of Bhopal.

Though the girl was found dead on October 19 last year, just two days after she was born, the arrest came only on Monday after the police confirmed through the forensic report that the babygirl's death was caused by overdose of nicotine. Also the mother of the girl, Anita Rana, deposed before magistrate that her husband was behind the killing of her newborn daughter.

Deputy inspector general of police of Gwalior range, RS Meena, confirmed to HT that the man, Narendra Rana, 40, has been arrested and booked for murder under section 302 of Indian Penal Code.

Giving the details, Suryakant Awasthi, the in-charge of the Murar Police Station said in wee hours of October 19, 2011, the mother found the new born girl dead by the side of her father at the private hospital where the child was born through normal delivery. The postmortem was conducted and when nicotine poisoning was indicated, her viscera were sent for forensic test.

“The forensic test report was received only recently and death by overdose of nicotine was confirmed. We then consulted the doctors at the private hospital about the medicines prescribed to the newborn and when no nictoine evidence was found, the statement of her mother was recorded. She said that her husband was in habit of chewing tobacco-laced gutkha and alleged that he might have killed her,” Awasthi told HT.

The mother was asked to depose before magistrate and based on the forensic reports and the statements; Rana was arrested on Monday on charges of murdering his daughter.

The mother also gave statements alleging dowry demands by her husband and in-laws and also threats to kill the baby when she was pregnant.
