A fatwa issued by Muslim clerics in Bhopal has termed Surya Namaskar as un-Islamic and forbids Muslims from perfoming it. The clerics issued the fatwa after religious opinion was sought on 'Surya Namaskar' by a Bhopal-resident recently.
Masood Khan, a resident of Koh-e-Fiza in Bhopal, had approached the Darul Ifta, a religious body, and sought guidance in the light of religion. The fatwa has come just when International Yoga Day is all set to be observed on Sunday.
Incidentally, Surya Namaskar doesn't figure in the scheduled Yoga protocols for the day.
"Most of the advertisements about the International Yoga Day, begin with the sun, especially, those on the television. The yoga practice is shown later. They may not say it openly but the aim is to take people towards Surya Namaskar and hence I sought the fatwa", said Khan.
