The Union ministry of chemicals and fertilisers has reportedly written to the MP government and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) seeking fresh details on deaths and injuries caused by the Bhopal gas disaster, survivors’ organisations have claimed.
The ministry officials have said the details might be received within a month, after which a meeting would be convened with the survivors to determine further action related to revision of the figures in Supreme Court curative petition, Rachna Dhingra of Bhopal Group of Information and Action told HT.
She said the ministry has written to the chief secretary of Madhya Pradesh and to the ICMR seeking the details available on figures of death and injuries caused by the disaster.
The ministry officials gave the information when representatives of the survivors’ organisations met them in New Delhi on December 10, Dhingra said. The meeting was in context of the assurance by the Union minister Ananth Kumar about the demands of the survivors on enhanced compensation and revision of figures of disaster related death and injury in the Supreme Court curative petition.
The secretary of ministry of chemicals and fertilisers, Surjit Kumar Chaudhary, or the joint secretary, Ajay Vara Prasad, could not be contacted for comments despite attempts.
