The state-run Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal is set for a major renovation, with the work on the project set to begin early next year. The state public works department (PWD) has been assigned the job to implement the ₹ 435-crore project.

As per the sources in the PWD, renovation work would begin with demolition of the wing housing three units--- the ophthalmology department, the swine flu ward and the hospital kitchen. Sources said, the PWD had initially planned to demolish 80% of the premises. It, however, changed the the plan after the Hamidia authorities stated their inability to shift all the departments to other places.

“The three departments, which would be demolished and re-constructed, have been chosen after proper planning. We have identified areas in the Kamla Nehru Hospital, in the same premises, to shift the three departments,” said Dr D K Pal, superintendent Hamidia Hospital.

The 800-bed facility with a daily inflow of about 1,500 patients would be upgraded to 2,000 beds, Pal said. “Newer technology will also be introduced. A time limit of 24 months has been set for completing the project,” he added.

Activists, however, are skeptical about the deadline. The cite the non-completion of six projects that were sanctioned and launched at the hospital in the last eight years.

A ₹9 crore project was sanctioned in 2009 to build a central OPD. It is not been completed. Similarly, some projects launched in 2012 such as virology lab, new operation theatre complex, new private ward complex and geriatric centre too are lying incomplete.

“Funds were granted for all the projects at Hamidia but none of them have been completed. The emergency unit get a new lift at ₹85 lakh, till date it hasn’t become operational,” claimed Pradeep Khandelwal, an activist.

The hospital supreintendent, however, claimed that the work on central OPD will be over soon.
