The Bhopal crime branch on Thursday closed in on a gang of thieves gradually gaining notoriety in the state capital.

The gang leader, Dharmendra Bhargav, turned out to be an engineering graduate who had turned to theft after he failed to land a job.

Bhargav and his ‘merry men’ — four others aged between 20 and 25 years — with their lavish ways caught the attention of locals, who in turn alerted police.

When police searched their house, they recovered a licensed revolver stolen from a forest ranger’s house, jewellery, camera and laptop. In Patna, another engineering student, Bipin Bharati, was arrested for using fake Facebook accounts to blackmail women, after the father of one of the victims filed a complaint with the police.

Bharati would take pictures of girl students with their boyfriends, open fake accounts and threaten to post the photographs, demanding money in return for the photos.
