A 43-year-old man battered his wife to death suspecting infidelity at PC Nagar under Habibganj police station on Thursday, the police said.

The accused Shivdeen Baman, a resident of PC Nagar, who worked as a labourer at a hotel in MP Nagar, was arrested, the police said.

His wife Geeta (40) worked as domestic help in different houses in PC Nagar.

Police further said Shivdeen, a habitual drinker, used to suspect the character of his wife and always beat her up in an inebriated state.

On Wednesday night, Shivdeen went to his house in an inebriated state and picked a fight with his wife over the same issue, the police added.

As the fight took an ugly turn, he picked up a lathi and began to rain blows on her and continued to do so till the early hours of Thursday when Geeta died, the police added.

On hearing the cries of his children, the neighbours rushed to the house and informed the police about the incident.

A police team reached the spot and registered a case after preliminary investigation.

"The body of Geeta was found in a pool of blood, suggesting that she was brutally beaten up. The accused has been detained," said Sudhir Arjaria, town inspector of Habibganj police station.

The couple has three daughters. The eldest daughter of Shivdeen, Arati, told the police that her father beat up her mother throughout the night and fled from home only after she died in the morning.

While he was raining lathi blows on his wife, he told his children that if they shout, they, too, would be killed, the police added.
