A minor girl set herself on fire in Barkhedia Gird village on Saturday after alleged harassment by a man from the same village.

Police said the 17-year-old girl of Barkhedia Gird village, about 215 kilometers north of Bhopal, poured kerosene on herself and set herself afire, but denied the harassment report.

According to police, the girl took the extreme step following differences with her mother.

The girl has been admitted to a district hospital and is in critical condition.

The victim’s father alleged that Bharat Sehariya had been harassing his daughter for the last three years. He also accused the police of taking no action against the accused even though he had lodged a complaint in this connection.

He said his daughter took the final step after Sehariya harassed her again on Saturday.

Guna SP KC Jain has, however, refuted the allegations. He told the HT correspondent that the girl’s parents had not registered any complaint against Sehariya.

"The girl's family did not register any complaint with the police. He said according to the victim's statement, she set herself ablaze after her mother reprimanded her for returning home late.”

However, sources said that Sehariya was keen to marry the minor girl - his neighbour, but began harassing her when she turned down his proposal.
