The parking problem at Bhopal's most crowded areas is expected to be resolved in two-and-a-half-years with the chief minister laying the foundation stone of a multi-level parking lot at New Market and MP Nagar Zone 1 on Thursday.
The five-storied multi-level parking lot worth Rs 80 crore at Community Hall, New Market, will be developed in two years while the parking lot in MP Nagar is expected to be completed in two-and-half-years.
The parking lots in New Market and MP Nagar will be constructed with Rs 36.33 crore and Rs 44.04 crore respectively.
Both parking lots will be equipped with facilities such as elevator, smoke detector, fire-fighting equipment and CCTV cameras.
Addressing the audience at a function in MP Nagar, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said: "This is the first step towards developing Bhopal into a smart and global city. We will develop the capital into one of the best cities of India."
Chouhan said the parking lots in MP Nagar and New Market will be named after Maharana Pratap, the erstwhile ruler of Mewar, and Tatya Tope, a leader who fought in the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
He also asked shopkeepers and residents to call the places Maharana Pratap Nagar and Tatya Tope Nagar instead of using the abbreviations MP Nagar and TT Nagar.
Mayor Alok Sharma said: "The parking in commercial areas and old city has become difficult. These parking lots will prove to be a good facility for the people."
The proposal for the multi-level parking had remained pending for the past nine years.
Bhopal has two multi-level parking lots at Ibrahimpura and Moti Masjid.
One more multi-level parking lot will be constructed at Bairagarh.
