The first Cochlear Implantation in Bhopal was carried out at the Hajela Hospital. Dr Anoop Hajela said the patient — three years old Prakashal Jain - had lost his hearing after a brain infection (meningitis) because of which his milestones were also getting delayed.

Hajela said ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon from Delhi Dr IM Hans and ENT surgeon from Bhopal Dr Amit Ganguli with their team carried out the surgery successfully.

The child will go through an auditory verbal therapy programme under audiologist Dharmendra Jha, he added. Hajela further said that the result of the therapy would include cognitive development and language abilities in the child.

The inner ear structure called cochlea contains the sensory organ for hearing. A cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who has profoundly lost his hearing or is severely hard of hearing.
