In a new turn in the case of a missing merchant navy officer from a shipping vessel in the middle of the seas, relatives of the missing officer have demanded a probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after his mobile phone revealed his selfies with half-shaved head on Friday in Bhopal.

“The mobile phone of my brother and merchant navy officer, Sandeep Kumar Yadav, has revealed some of his selfies in which his head is half-shaved. The photographs are dated February 29, 2016, when he was on the ship only. This raises strong suspicion that he was harassed by the crew members of the ship or was being ragged as he was a junior in the ship. We demand a CBI inquiry in this case to nab the accused”, said Bhupendra Yadav, elder brother of missing merchant navy officer.

Speaking to HT, Bhupendra said after coming back from Gujarat on March 21, he cracked the lock code of the mobile phone of Sandeep given by the shipping company, after which the selfies were revealed on the mobile phone. They had got his mobile phone along with Sandeep’s other valuables from the shipping company.

“As the mobile phone was having a lock code, the management of the shipping company was unable to distort it. I have asked the shipping ministry officials, who are investigating the case, to enquire the shipping company officials about the selfies procured from his mobile phone which definitely raise serious questions on the crew members of the vessel”, added Bhupendra.

“I have also asked the shipping company officials to provide me the voyage data record (VDR) of the vessel along with the names and contact details of all the 25 crew members present on the vessel during the incident. But the company officials have refused to provide me the same by saying that they would only provide it to the government officials investigating the case. I will now write to the officials of Ministry of External Affairs and Shipping Ministry to order a CBI inquiry into the matter to at least find what has actually happened to my brother”, Bhupendra.

The shipping company officials have however denied the allegations regarding harassment to the merchant navy officer or ragging on the vessel.

“The missing officer was never harassed or ragged on the ship by any of the crew members. An investigation is already being carried by the government agencies which will reveal the exact truth about the whole incident”, said Pradeep Correa, assistant vice president, the Great Eastern Shipping Company Limited.

Sandeep Kumar Yadav who hails from Bhopal, was working as a trainee electrical officer on a shipping vessel named MT Jag Pushpa and went missing under mysterious circumstances on March 3. The vessel had left Vadinar port, Gujarat, on February 22 and was en-route to Maputo, Mozambique when the incident happened.
