Two women, whose alertness had helped to save a 10-year-old girl from an abductor, were felicitated at a programme held in Saumya Enclave in Awadhpuri on Wednesday.

When 31-year-old Gaurav Bhattacharya was forcefully taking away a 10-year-old girl from Awadhpuri on Sunday, two women got suspicious and it was due to their alertness that a youngster chased the suspect and the victim was saved.

Later the police arrested the abductor. The women -- Rama Bai and Rekha -- were honoured on the occasion. The police officials handed them Rs 2,500 in cash and a citation each.

Senior police officials including deputy inspector general, Yogesh Chaudhary, and superintendent of police-South, Anshuman Singh, were present on the occasion.

On the occasion the women recounted their experience. They said though the person was acting suspiciously, they initially felt reluctant as to what they should do and how to stop him.

But when the girl cried, "Save me aunty", the women raised an alarm. They asked a youngster, Pappu Singh, to chase the abductor.

This unnerved the suspect who later dropped the girl and sped off. However, he was caught. He allegedly had wrong intention and had taken away the girl by luring her with a false promise that he knew her father and would take her to his place.

The role of the women in saving the girl and also aiding the arrest of the suspect was lauded. Local residents also honoured the women on behalf of the residential society. Pappu Singh, who was earlier also felicitated, was also present.
