People in Bhopal came up with an innovative idea to register their protest against bad condition of roads in Bhopal on Monday.
Some residents and Congress corporators organised an innovative bike race cum protest rally, a challenge to commute on the potholed road in Shahjahanabad area of Old City.
Some elderly protesters acted as the judge and later announced the winners, who succeeded in driving somehow without any major trouble.
The race of protesters with banners and placards started from Margatiya Mandir, Shahjahanabad, and after passing through Islami Gate, Bharat Talkies, Jumerati, DIG Bungalow, Hamidia Road and finally concluded again at Margatiya Mandir Shahjahanabad.
The protesters had also brought a doctor, mechanic, ambulance, helmet seller and knee guards to make a point that if one has to drive on the potholed roads of Bhopal, one constantly needs to keep all these close by.
Congress corporator Shahid Ali, who was the main organiser of the protest rally, told this reporter that the condition of the roads is so bad in some parts of Bhopal, that one cannot ensure one’s safety anymore.
“That is why we organised a race to see how many people can take up this challenge to commute on the potholed roads.
Most had a tough time. Many of them even had a narrow escape.
Those who finally managed it without much difficulty were declared winners,” he said.
The incessant monsoon showers have worsened the condition of the roads in many parts of Bhopal.
Water overflows on many road stretches creating inconvenience for commuters and pedestrians.
Many roads that are dug up get inundated. Many trenches and low lying areas on roadsides get water logged, like 10 Number, Board office Chouraha, 6 Number, Board Office, and so on.
Water overflows onto the roads from choked drains, worsening the overall civic mess in the city.
Many roads both in New Bhopal and Old City are pockmarked with potholes and depressions, increasing the chances of road mishaps in the waterlogged conditions.
The long trenches dug up in connection with developments works like laying of cables or pipelines in areas like Gautam Nagar, Royal Market road and so on again get inundated with rainwater.
The bad restoration work after laying of pipes kept making commuting difficult for vehicles and pedestrians in many parts of the especially, the interior parts of Old City like Chandbadh area.
Bhopal Municipal Corporation is laying high density polyethylene pipes (HDPEP) in the city for the distribution of the Narmada water supply.
But due to shoddy restoration work, some areas became messy with heavy rainfall.
Rainwater gets mixed with the loose soil.
The areas that have been affected include Vijay Nagar Khushi Pura, Karariya, Rajendra Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Ashoka Garden and so on.
