A biography of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the struggles of women in Mumbai’s Shiv Sena, Kautilya’s Artha Shastra, Hindu festivals, interpretations of the Gita, unsolved disappearances in the US, Taliban terror and yoga will be among the themes of 3,000 books set to arrive, sources said.
The state police have initiated moves for the `5 lakh project. The assistant inspector general of police (AIG-Provisioning) at the state PHQ invited e-tenders on August 12 on behalf of the state DGP RK Shukla to buy the books.
The Modi life-story will be the one authored by Sanjiv Kumar, while another book, ‘Shiv Sena Women: Violence and Communalism in a Bombay Slum’, explains how low-income working-class females of the Maximum City organized themselves along paramilitary lines.
Another book is on the festivals of Hindus, while Aurobindo Mazumdar’s ‘Vande Mataram’ is also being ordered. The list also includes ‘Srimad Bhagvad Gita’ by Lokmanya Tilak and RSS ideologue VD Savarkar. ‘Chanakya Niti’ and ‘Kautiliya: On War and the Military Wisdom of Arthshashtra’ will speak on the thoughts on the Mauryan royal adviser of the 4th century BCE.
The MP police’s wish list of books also pertains to Islam and terrorism, besides atrocities against minorities. Books on these subjects include Islam Fundamentalism, Pakistan and the Muslim World, Taliban: A Face of Terrorism and Islamic Fundamentalism: The New Global Threat.
The long list of books showcases the state police’s penchant for crime and policing in the US. These include New Crusade: America’s War on terrorism, Fair and Foul: Sports and Criminal Behaviour in the US, America’s War on Sex: The Affect on law, lust and liberty, Drugs and Money Laundering: Latin America’s Cocaine Dollar, Cold Cases: Famous Unsolved Mysteries, Policies and Disappearances in America.
The list also includes books like The Global Underworld: Transnational Policies and the US, Spying in America in the Post 9/11 World: Domestic Threat and Need for Change and Double Jeoprady: A Reference Guide to the US Constitution, besides Smuggling and Trafficking in Human Beings: All Roads Lead to America and The FBI Career Guide.
Amid a rise in crimes against Dalits in the state, the police have ordered books on Dalit Mukti Andolan, the rights of its women, the community’s historic documents, thinking and rights.
Further, the list also pertains to Islam and terrorism, besides atrocities against minorities. Books related to these subjects include Islam Fundamentalism, Pakistan and the Muslim World, Taliban: A Face of Terrorism, Islamic Fundamentalism.
The list also has a host of books on revolution, including Avtar Singh Jaiswal’s The Legacy of Bhagat Singh and the Naxal Movement.
There is focus, also, on keeping the men in khaki fit physically and mentally. Books to arrive will also be on prevention of obesity and mental stress, yoga and health, besides those dealing with time and memory management.
