Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia in Gwalior on Thursday demanded apology from the Narendra Modi-led NDA government for detaining family members of ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal and his party vice-president Rahul Gandhi the day before in Delhi.

He said the government must apologize to the grieving family for its action. The Congress chief whip’s comment came amid staging of protest and burning of effigy of prime minister by members of the party district unit here on Thursday.

Stating that Congress was not trying to score brownie points over the incident but was safeguarding democracy, Scindia alleged the dispensation was demeaning democratic system.

The detention incident was akin to murder of democracy, he claimed saying how could paying visit to a bereaved family to console them be perceived as unlawful or anti-social act.

“I want to know from leaders of the ruling party why Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to meet family members of Grewal at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi on Wednesday,” asked Scindia. He also criticised union minister VK Singh for questioning the mental state of the ex-serviceman terming the remark “highly condemnable.”
