A woman constable of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Ritu Kumari (25), shot herself with her service revolver at Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal on Tuesday afternoon.

She was injured in her stomach and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital where her condition is reported to be critical. The reason that prompted her to take the extreme step is not clear. Ritu's duty was scheduled at the entrance gate of the airport from 2pm.

According to information, she went to armory (Quarter Guard building) and got her service revolver issued from the CISF store room. After coming out of the armory, she shot herself with the revolver. Hearing the gunshot, the other CISF personnel, came out of the armory and informed their senior officials about the incident. She was rushed to a private hospital nearby.

Additional superintendent of police Devendra Rajpoot said a surgery has been done but her condition is critical. The victim's statement is yet to be recorded. "As of now, the reason behind the extreme step is not clear. In fact, we are yet to confirm whether it is a case of suicide or accident. We are recording the statements of eyewitness," he said.

The police have recovered Ritu's service revolver and a live cartridge from the spot. Police said the CISF personnel who were present on the spot and Ritu's friends would be quizzed in this regard.

Ritu, a resident of Muradabad in Uttar Pradesh, had joined CISF as constable in 2009. She had been transferred to Bhopal from Mumbai in February, 2014. She lived with another woman constable Poonam at a hostel of CISF on the airport premises. Poonam is on leave.

Airport sources said she was upset over not getting leave. She had applied for leave to go to her native place in Muradabad on Rakshabandan but her leave application was rejected, source claimed. Commandant of CISF, Vijay Kumar, however, refused to comment on issue. "I am not the authorised person to talk about this matter," he told HT.
