Ticket aspirants in the Congress were eagerly awaiting the announcement by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) as candidates' names were likely to be announced by late Monday evening.

Sources in the party said the first list may come later in the night. However, it would mostly have names of candidates of the municipal councils and panchayats. Discussion is still going on regarding names of candidates for the posts of mayors in the municipal corporations in the state.

The names of mayoral candidates have been finalised at some places. However, the announcement is being delayed. Insiders say that the list has also been delayed to avoid any damage, especially, to stem the possibility of dissidence. The reason is that ticket aspirants with their supporters may create unsavoury scenes in public or there may be infighting.

"As far as tickets for the posts of chairmen and corporators in municipal councils and panchayats are concerned, a large number of candidates have been finalised. In fact, the local legislators have been taken into confidence about it. Just the announcement is being delayed," said a senior Congress functionary.

"The legislators have been given B forms to be handed over to the candidates but there has been no open announcement," the functionary further said. "On the basis of the observers' report, the tickets were finalised. However, the legislators were also taken into confidence before coming to a decision," he said. However, people are more interested in knowing about candidates for the posts of mayor in municipal corporations in major cities of the state.

Frontrunners among mayoral candidates

Frontrunners for the post of mayor in municipal corporations include Neetu Tiwari for Satna, Kavita Pandey for Rewa, Shyamvati Singh for Singrauli, Jagdish Yadav for Satna, Manoj Rajani for Dewas, Smita Sharma for Ratlam and Ismail Ansari for Burhanpur.

Party sources said these names were almost final and there was confusion only at places where there was panel of 3-4 names which were being discussed.

In Khandwa, there are four major contenders viz. Narayan Nagar, Virendra Mishra, Arun Sethi and Ajay Ojha. In Indore and some other municipal corporations, deliberations are still on to choose the mayoral candidate. The mayoral candidates' names would be officially released in a day or two.
