Congress declared its candidates for Shahdol Lok Sabha and Nepanagar assembly by-polls on Tuesday. Both the seats are reserved for scheduled tribes.

As per the state Congress spokesperson, the announcement was made by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi. The candidates include Himadri Singh for Shahdol Lok Sabha seat and Antarsingh Barde for Nepanagar assembly seat.

The by-polls were necessitated due to demise of Shahdol MP Dalpat Singh Paraste in a Gurgaon hospital and Nepanagar MLA Rajendra Dadu in a road accident.

The nomination process will begin on October 26. Scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on November 3 while the papers can be withdrawn up to November 5. Polling will be held for both seats on November 19 and the results will be declared on November 22.

State Congress’ general secretary (organisation) Chandrika Prasad Dwivedi said, “The Congress’ senior leaders, office-bearers and workers will make concerted efforts to not leave any stone unturned for ensuring the victory of the party candidates on both the seats.”

Talking to the Hindustan Times state BJP media in charge Lokendra Parashar said, “It hardly matters for the BJP about the timing of declaration of the candidates by Congress. The BJP will soon declare its candidates.”

BJP leaders reportedly were reportedly pursuing Himadri to join their party. She comes from an influential political family of the district.

Himadri’s father late Dalbir Singh had been a Union minister while mother Rajesh Nandini Singh who was also an MP from 2009 to 2014 passed away in May this year.

Since the BJP won the seat in 2014 Lok Sabha polls the BJP has put its prestige at stake in the elections. More because it lost Ratlam-Jhabua Lok Sabha seat by-poll in November last year.

Congress’ Nepanagar candidate Antar Singh Birde is Burhanpur Zila Panchayat member.
