Lakhs of people reached Eintkhedi on the outskirts of Bhopal to attend the grand Islamic congregation Alami Tablighi Ijtima that began on Saturday.
The Ijtima began with a morning prayer. The jamaats (groups of devotees) from all over the world, including US, France, Russia, Indonesia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Fiji, Ghana and several other countries, have reached Eintkhedi, where a mini township has come up for the three-day event.
It is estimated that around five lakh (half-a-million) people attended the Ijtima on the first day. From early Saturday morning, people from all over the city were seen going towards Eintkhedi in personal vehicles, buses and trucks.
During the day, leading Islamic scholars gave discourses to the gathering. They urged Muslims to follow the faith in spirit. On the second day on Sunday, mass 'nikaahs' would be solemnised, which has been a practice for several years.
At the Ijtima venue, stalls and shops selling books and eatables have been put up.
The Ijtima was earlier held in Tajul Masajid but because of the rising number of devotees, it was shifted outside the city, almost a decade ago. The three-day event would end on Monday after a prayer (dua) for global peace. Over a million people attend the Ijtima on the final day.
