The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Sunday introduced door-to-door collection of household garbage in eight more municipal wards on the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Mayor Swati Godbole said the door-to-door household garbage collection will be extended to the entire municipal limit by the first week of December.
Recently, the municipal corporation had started the system in three municipal wards – Swami Dayanand Saraswati ward, Subhadra Kumar Chouhan and Pandit Bhawani Prasad Tiwari ward.
The other eight municipal wards where it was started on Sunday include Kasturba Gandhi ward, Mahatma Gandhi ward, Jawaharganj ward, Pandit Govind Vallabh Pant ward, Dr Ram Monohar Lohia ward, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay ward, Rajiv Gandhi ward and Dr Rajendra Prasad ward.
Over 450 tonnes of garbage is generated per day in the municipal limits and the same is being disposed by dumping in landfill sites.
The garbage collection work is awarded to a private firm Essel Infra Limited. The household garbage will be used to generate electricity for which the municipal corporation — under a public-private partnership — has set up a plant at Kathonda whose work is awarded to Essel Infra Limited.
