Even as major dacoit gangs have been eliminated, there are still certain smaller bands of bandits that are active in Chambal region.
Among them was dacoit Pan Singh Baghel who graduated from murders to abduction for ransom, and has finally been arrested on Wednesday evening, police said.
The police have heaved a sigh of relief with the arrest of Baghel, who had increased his activities in recent times.
Baghel as wanted for murders apart from other offences. He took to crime a couple of years ago but his first major offence was a murder in November 2013.
After killing Rajendra Baghel, he was caught and jailed. But he came out on bail and again committed a murder.
From murders to abductions, Baghel’s gang was emerging in the region
Besides, Pan Singh Baghel was adding members to his gang, and began abductions for ransom--the favourite tactic of the Chambal dacoits, which brings money without bloodshed.
Earlier this year, his gang had opened fire at a locality inhabited by Jatava community. The aim was to threaten them, as they were not succumbing to his extortion demands.
In the latest incident on November 4, the gang had abducted Nripal Yadav, from Golhari-Mahavipura. The victim’s kin were asked to pay a ransom of Rs 15 lakh.
After the kin expressed inability to pay the large amount, it was brought to Rs 8 lakh. The victim’s kin had also informed the police.
The abducted person was rescued on November 13. Since then, the police were tracking the movement of the gang.
Baghel carried a reward of Rs 30,000 on his head and the police planned to increase it further, said sources.
Police sources said that they had got information about the movement of the dacoit gang, which was cornered in the forests.
Baghel was caught though other members of the gang managed to escape on Wednesday evening.
Sub divisional officer of police (SDOP) KD Sonakia said that Pan Singh Baghel was arrested from the forest of Rasodhna.
“The accused is being interrogated”, said Sonakia.
