A 23-year-old engineering student died after allegedly falling into a flooded nullah on Saturday night in Misrod locality in Bhopal.

The man, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was going to a nearby dhaba on his bike with his two friends when the incident happened, the police said.

According to the Misrod police, Malkhan Singh Verma, a final year engineering student at Barkatullah University Institute of Technology (BUIT) and a resident of Shivpuri district, was swept away by the flooded nullah in Samardha area of the locality.

On the way to the dhaba, their motorbike lost balance over a bridge on a nullah after which the deceased and one of his friend Kalyan, who was driving the bike, fell into the nullah.

His friend was saved by the locals standing near the bridge while Malkhan was swept away by the water, the police added.

“The locals informed the police after which they immediately reached the spot. The police recovered him few metres away from the bridge and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors. The other two men, Kalyan and Govind, sustained minor injuries and are out of danger,” said town inspector of Misrod Kunwar Singh Mukati.

“The three men were drunk when the incident happened. The deceased’s body was sent for post-mortem by the police. The other two were sent for medical test where it was proved that they were drunk. A case has been registered in the incident under relevant sections of IPC and investigations are on,” added Mukati.
