Eunuch beats BJP, Congress to win Sagar mayor's election

bhopal Updated: Dec 17, 2009 09:12 IST

Newly elected Sagar municipal corporation mayor Kamala Bai (54), an eunuch, emerged as the most surprising winner in the mayoral elections in a dozen towns of Madhya Pradesh as her victory margin (43433) in Sagar is more than double of the second highest winner, Prabhat Sahu of BJP (20676) in Jabalpur. Incidentally, Kamala Bai's election was arguably the least expensive of all the mayoral candidates.

There were hardly any banners/posters or newspaper ads, soliciting votes for the second eunuch mayor of Madhya Pradesh.

Kamala Bai's namesake Kamala Jaan had won the mayoral election in neighbouring Katni district ten years ago. However, the MP High Court later quashed the election on the ground that Kamaka Jaan had contested on the post reserved for male whereas her name in the voters list was in the female category.

Kamala Bai of Sagar says she foresees no such legal wrangling over gender issues as she won on the seat reserved for women (SC).

MP also has the distinction of electing the first eunuch MLA of the world Shabnam Mausi from Sohagpur assembly segment in a by election in 1996. An eponymous film with actor Ashutosh Rana in the lead was made on Shabnam Mausi.

The film, however, sank without a trace.

Although head (Guru) of her community in Sagar, Kamala Bai is absolutely novice in politics. " It is the glaring apathy of successive mayors towards development, specially on the water front, that prompted me to fight the election", she told HT. Sagar is one of the chronic water scarce towns in Bundelkhand region, nearly 200 km north of Bhopal.

The voters in Sagar attribute Kamala Bai's spectacular victory to utter disillusionment with the BJP and the Congress. The infighting within both the parties also helped her.
