Four members of a family committed suicide by jumping into a reservoir in Shahdol, 592 km east from here, said police on Friday.

Middle-aged Jabar Singh, his wife Prem Bai, and their two children including 19-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son ended their lives. All the four persons drowned. Jabar Singh had tied all family members with a rope before jumping into the water body.

The couple's 13-year-old son had also gone along but somehow managed to run away and survived the incident. On the basis of preliminary investigation, the police suspect that the family members had a suicide pact.

Sources said that the Singh's daughter was promised marriage by a youth but he later refused.

The girl's family had meeting with the youth's family but to no avail. Subsequently, on the night intervening Thursday and Friday, the girl's family committed suicide.

"It seems they committed suicide because the couple's teenaged daughter who was unmarried had got pregnant and they feared that it would bring them infamy," said a police official at Gohparu police station.

"Action is being taken against the youth, Bhim Singh, who had cheated the girl by promising her of marriage but didn't keep his word, prompting the family to commit suicide", he added. The Shahdol police are conducting investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
