Five young men drowned while four others swam to safety when their boat overturned while they were partying on it in Bhopal’s Lower Lake on Sunday night, police said.
According to the police, the nine men had reportedly rowed to the Kamlapati Ghat side to have a drink when their boat capsized in the middle of the lake.
Sajid Khan, in-charge of firefighting and emergency services at Bhopal Municipal Corporation, said the incident happened around 9.30pm.
“A team of divers and other firefighters immediately left for rescue operation. Flood lights were set up to aid in rescue,” he said.
Bodies of all the men were fished out in the rescue operation which was carried out late into the night. While most of the victims were residents of Bhopal’s Govindpura area, two belonged to Kotra and Bhoipura.
Superintendent of police (north) Arvind Saxena said the identity of the victims is yet to be established.
