The Bhopal police on Monday arrested four persons who allegedly gang-raped a 24-year-old woman on VIP road under Talaiya police station on Saturday night.

The accused have been identified as Ajay Yadav, Subhash Yadav, Sachin Hariharan and Devendra Choudhary. All accused are Bhartiya Niketan and sons of retired BHEL employees.

The victim — a resident of Raipur in Chhattisgarh — told the police that she had separated from her husband and came to Bhopal on July 9. She said she had rented a room near Noor Mahal and stayed there while searching for a job.

About a week ago, she met all the accused near Upper Lake and that the accused promised to help her get a job.

In her complaint to the police, the victim — who is the mother of two children — told the police that on Saturday night, one of the accused called her to VIP road with the promise of introducing her to a person who would get her a job.

When she went there, the accused forced her into a car and raped her in the moving vehicle.

The victim said that she was dropped off in Mata Mandir Square around midnight by the accused who then fled the scene. She later called up her landlord who took her to the police station and lodged a complaint.

The police, however, have doubts regarding the victim’s story as messages exchanged between her and one of the accused, Ajay Yadav, who works with a private firm, suggest that the woman had called Ajay to VIP road with his friends.

Superintendent of police (SP) North, Arvind Saxena said that a case had been registered and that all four accused had been arrested.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that woman and one of the accused, Ajay Yadav, were friends and used talk over phone and WhatsApp,” said Saxena.
