A private nursing home illegally run by a government doctor was sealed by the district administration in Balaghat on Friday.

Dr Ashok Lilhare, a medical specialist posted in the government district hospital, was running the nursing home at his residence. “He (Dr Ashok Lilhare) was running the nursing home, which is against the service rule,” Dr KK Khosla, chief medical and health officer of Balaghat said.

Dr Khosla told HT that government doctors are not allowed to run parallel business, and especially hospitals or nursing homes. This is the second time that an action is being taken against the nursing home.

The administration took the action on the basis of the findings of the two-member committee headed by Khosla. When the committee visited the place they found a lot of medical equipments which are necessary to run a nursing home including an x-ray machine and a pathology laboratory.

The members of the committee also spoke to some of the patients who were at the nursing home for treatment. After the inspection, a notice was served to Dr Lilhare. In response to the notice, the doctor claimed that the nursing home was set up for his son, who is doing his postgraduate course on medicine.

The district collector of Balaghat on Thursday issued orders to seal the nursing home and instructed the chief medical and health officer and the sub divisional magistrate to give report about execution of the orders. The nursing home was sealed on Friday. However, Lilhare could not be contacted for comments.
