Gwalior sees jump in civic body revenue collection

The demonetisation of high-denomination banknotes has proved to be a boon for the cash-starved Gwalior Municipal Corporation (GMC), which has recorded a surge in revenue collection — people can pay tax to civic bodies with the now-defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.

Three other major civic bodies — Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur — also witnessed a similar windfall.

GMC public relations officer Keshav Chauhan said under normal circumstances, there is a surge in tax collection towards fag end of the financial year — between January and March, when nearly 75% of the total revenue is collected — while April to December is considered as lean period.

This time, the GMC has collected Rs 6.5 crore since November 8, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the demonetisation, as of November 15. Residents have deposited Rs 2.5 crore in property tax, Rs 1.20 crore as water tax, Rs 1.25 crore for building permissions and `1 crore under other categories.

With this sudden increase in tax deposited, the revenue collection for the current fiscal by the GMC has touched Rs 28.5 crore.

Chauhan further said the civic body’s commissioner Anay Duwedi has set an ambitious revenue target of Rs 100 crore in 2016-17.

There are an estimated 2.12 lakh registered properties in Gwalior.
