Two sisters, including a minor, allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison on Sunday at Begumganj locality in Raisen after being harassed for the last one year by a neighbour.
Both are undergoing treatment at a district hospital in Bhopal where they are said to be in a serious condition.
According to Begumganj police, the girls, aged 18 and 14 years, were alone in the house as their mother had gone to fetch water from a well and their brother was out for some work.
The accused, Raju Lodhi, 30, entered their house after finding them alone. Lodhi, a small time farmer, was allegedly in an inebriated state and started molesting the elder sister. When she screamed, her younger sister came to help her.
The accused, seeing the resistance, fled the scene, the police said. The sisters consumed insecticide and their mother, upon returning, found them vomiting.
The girls informed their family about the incident and they were rushed to a nearby hospital in an unconscious state, the police added.
“The police arrested the accused and investigations are on in the case,” said town inspector Ajay Dubey.
According to a local source, the accused is married and is a father of four children. He often used to harass the two sisters.
“Their mother had complained against him to his wife and father many times but he did not stop. The family members of the victims did not complain to the police because they belong to the labour class and hesitated in getting involved in legal procedures. The accused had also been harassing other women in the village,” said the source.
