Hoax terror alert on social media causes panic among Bhopal residents

A rumour about a possible terrorist attack in Bhopal, circulated on social media on Friday, caused panic among the residents.

According to the message, that is being circulated on WhatsApp, Bhopal is on red alert for a couple of days. It states: “...Tune to a news channel for more. Tell your family to avoid crowded places like lakes, malls and markets for four days.”

The hoax message further states that the prime target of the terrorists will be the Upper lake, DB Mall, Barakatullah University, BSSS College, JLU, besides all engineering colleges, schools, railway stations, bus stands and other public places. The police, however, denied any such inputs received from Intelligence Bureau.

Terming the message as hoax, deputy inspector general of police (DIG), Bhopal, D Sreenivasa Varma said, “I am surprised to see the message. It is a mischief done by the anti-social elements. We have not any such reports. The residents of the city need not worry. The police are always on alert.”

According to police sources, the message has particularly spread among the college and schools students and teachers. A police officer on the condition of anonymity said they are trying to find out the source of the message.
