Director general, election commission of India (ECI) Akshay Rout and deputy election commissioner Alok Shukla during a meeting in Bhopal with heads of departments in the run up to the assembly elections said the systematic voter education and electoral participation program (SVEEP) should not be seen only as a government programme but should also link youth, women to ensure maximum possible voting in the elections.

Speaking at a meeting on Wednesday, Rout said the onus of success of SVEEP plan is on the nodal officer.

He instructed that district-level SVEEP plans be made and merged with a state-level plan. At the district level, popular figures can be roped in to work for the SVEEP plan.

He added that students be asked to take affidavits to their homes before the elections.
Shukla asked officials of the economics, statistics and planning department to improve the work done in the baseline survey.

The officials also felicitated actor Rajiv Verma and folk singer Prahlad Tipaniya who have been engaged by the election commission to popularise SVEEP plan.

Earlier, both the officials addressed collectors, deputy collectors and tehsildars undergoing election- related training at the Academy of Administration.

Shukla emphasised on the role of the administration in conducting elections. He said success of the SVEEP plan largely depends on the administration.

Rout said there are new issues with each election and hence the need for training officials.

Chief electoral officer, MP, Jaideep Govind said that nearly 250 officers are taking part in the training programme which is being held in phases. The third and last phase would be held between June 27-29 in which officials from remaining districts would participate.
