A jilted lover in Bhopal has confessed to committing the Obaidullahganj double murders, police said after six teams frantically searched for the man over the holidays.

“Police zeroed in on Naveen Tatpal after looking into all people known to the family and rounded up the accused on Saturday around 4pm,” said ASP (Raisen) Ramsanehi Mishra, adding he confessed after intense interrogation.

The 25-year-old accused claimed responsibility for killing Obaidullahganj chief medical officer’s wife and daughter — Mridula Singh (47) and Pratiksha Singh (20) — when they were alone in their house on Thursday.

According to the police, Pratiksha and the accused, a student of engineering, were in a relationship for almost seven years. Police said the accused acted out in rage after she allegedly started avoiding him some months back. Naveen also started suspecting that Pratiksha might be involved in a relationship with someone else.

On the day of Holi, Wednesday, Naveen went to the victim’s house but left after seeing guests at the residence. When he went back he saw a family leave and suspected they may have come to ask for Pratiksha’s hand in marriage. He exchanged several messages with Pratiksha over the day, at the end of which she agreed to meet and called Naveen home, police said.

Police said Naveen reached her residence on Thursday with a knife around 3 pm when the mother and daughter were alone. Having visited Pratiksha at home several times in the past, Mridula Singh allowed him in the house.

As Naveen and Pratiksha spoke in a room, the mother left. After speaking with the girl for some time, Naveen pulled the knife out and stabbed her on the neck and behind the ear, police said. On hearing cries of pain, Mridula ran to the room and tried to interrupt Naveen, who was repeatedly stabbing the girl. He stabbed Mridula and fled the scene, police said.

Police have registered a case of murder against Naveen and will present him before the court on Sunday. The police are expected to add more sections of the IPC according to the proceedings of the case.

On Friday, Hoshangabad inspector general Satish Saxena also announced a cash reward of Rs 25,000 for giving information of the accused. NAVEEN WILL PRESENTED BEFORE THE COURT ON SUNDAY.
