As Katni police are delving deep to figure out the financial burden, which is alleged to have prompted local BJP leader Shashank Tiwari to kill three family members before shooting self to death, sources say the debts could have run into crores.

Tiwari allegedly murdered his kill wife Mini, daughter Chahat, 12, son Avi, 8, and two pet dogs before turning the gun on himself late on Friday night at his house in Bahoriband area of the district.

Their bodies were discovered on Saturday morning by a domestic help. Police have registered a case under Section 174 (suicide) of the CrPC in the matter.

Katni district police superintendent Gaurav Rajput on Sunday told HT that the police were in the process of recording statements of people close to Tiwari and his family to find out the actual volume of debts. Sources, without wishing to be named, maintained that the debts could be over `5 crore.

The autopsy report and empty cartridges, recovered from the spot, have revealed that the dead had been shot once from point blank range in the head, police said.

Police will send the two licensed guns used by the killing-cum-suicide for tests to the forensic science lab in Sagar, and a suicide note, purportedly signed by Tiwari and wife Mini, for analysis to police headquarters in Bhopal.

The suicide note recovered from the site mentions the time when Chahat and Avi were killed.

Two other timings, one of Friday late night and another Saturday early morning, too are mentioned in the note. Police suspect these could well be the timings of Mini’s murder and Tiwari’s suicide. Sources in the police said the bloodbath could well have been planned by Tiwari in agreement with wife.

Tiwari had contested the 2013 MP assembly polls from Bahoriband seat of Katni as a Samjawadi Party candidate and later switched sides to the ruling BJP.

He killed himself and his family just a day before his renovated petrol pump was to reopen.
