Property dealer Arshad Qureshi was detained in Katni town on the suspicion of shooting dead his wife and minor daughter with a licensed rifle, police said.
Shama Parveen, 36, and daughter Jia, 12, were found dead inside their house in Ahmad Nagar, while the couple’s toddler Arsh is battling for life at a Jabalpur hospital. Arsh sustained bullet wounds on the head.
The Katni police booked him for murder and attempt to murder.
Qureshi is under scanner for delay in informing his friend and the police about the deaths and critical gunshot wounds to the toddler, said Katni SP Gaurav Tiwari. “As per forensic experts, the mother-daughter duo died by 4am on Wednesday. Qureshi informed it to a close friend at 1.30pm. He claimed he woke up at 1.15pm on Wednesday,” he said.
Shama’s autopsy report revealed two bullets were shot from point blank range into her head. “It’s difficult for anybody to pump two bullets into the head. The autopsy makes it clear that Shama didn’t kill herself, but was murdered along with daughter. The milkman told us that he returned without delivering milk in the morning as the house was locked from inside,” Tiwari added.
Qureshi’s business was not doing well due to slump in real estate market. Police found property and farmhouse worth around `2 crore were in Shama’s name. Qureshi kept ties with his first wife who lived in Katni, police said. The possibility of extra marital relation for the killings cannot be ruled out, police said.
