Lightning kills 12-year-old, many villages marooned in northwest MP

Heavy rainfall that started on Sunday night and continued for a good part of Monday led to flood-like situation in Burhanpur, Neemuch, Khargone, Harda and Sehore districts as rivers and streams overflew and culverts were inundated cutting off the road connectivity to several villages.
A 12-year-old girl was killed in Sehore's Ramnagar after lightning struck her.
Nine ghats along Tapti river in Burhanpur submerged as the river flowed nine metres above danger mark on Monday. Heavy rains lashed Burhanpur district from Sunday night. Burhnapur-Betul state highway which lies in Tapti river catchment area was closed for traffic. District administration declared high alert as it shifted 50 families from low-lying areas in Burhanpur.
Five people who were swept away along with boat from Goraghat in Nepa Nagar were rescued from Sindhkheda. Five people who were stranded on a tree near a railway track on the outskirts of Harda town on Monday morning were rescued by district disaster management force and police.
In the last 48 hours, rains have increased the water level in rivers in Khargone. They are flowing above danger mark in the district which has received 20 inches of rainfall so far. According to reports coming in from different parts of the district, Narmada, Veda and Kunda rivers are flowing eight metres above danger mark.
Narmada river level is on constant rise which has inundated ghats and temples. District administration has sounded high alert along the river banks. Veda river flowed over the bridge which inundated several areas in Goganwa. District’s Dejala-Devda bridge has been lost to sheets of water. This has disrupted traffic flow along the route.
In Ichchawar of Sehore, a 12-year-old girl Billo Korku was killed after lightning struck her in Ramnagar locality. It took the police six hours to bring her body to the tehsil headquarters for post mortem because of severed road connectivity. In Nasrullahganj and Rehti, 50 villages were cut off from the tehsil headquarters and also from Bhopal. Water entered many government offices in Sehore district headquarters and affected work.
In Harda, rivers like Ganjal, Ajnal and Machak spilled over, causing flooding in Harda town and nearby rural areas. A culvert at village Abjgaon Khurd on Harda-Chhipaner road collapsed because of the heavy rain. Also, the overflowing rivers cut off the Indore-Betul national highway and important roads like Khandwa-Harda and Harda-Hoshangabad roads. About 2,000 people from low-lying areas were shifted to safer places. The district administration has issued order for survey of damaged crops. The survey is likely from Tuesday.
