Days after the high-profile wedding of Mulayam Singh's grandnephew with Lalu Yadav's daughter on February 26, Madhya Pradesh panchayat minister Gopal Bhargava has announced that he'll marry off his son and daughter at a mass wedding programme with other 1,100 couples under the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana.
Bhargava told HT that he arrived at the conclusion after taking the consent of his children. He said encouraging mass marriage will only help people spend frugally.
The minister's son, Abhishek, will be marrying Shilpi Acharya, daughter of an assistant sub inspector from Ganjbasoda, while his daughter Avantika Bhargava, a doctor, will tie the knot with engineer Nitin Sharma.
"The marriages will be solemnised at Garhakota on April 22 at Kisan Stadium under the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana. About 1,100 couples would tie the knot on that day," said Bhargava.
The minister said it was his duty to promote the scheme.
"It is observed that people taking benefit of the scheme belong to the SC, ST or OBC classes while the influential stayed away from it. It saves a lot of money…," he said.
The minister said beside his relatives and friends, he would invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah.
The social justice department had started the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana about five years ago where mass marriages of the under-privileged are conducted.
The government spends Rs 25,000 on each wedding, which includes a fixed deposit of Rs 10,000 given to the couple.
More than three lakh weddings have been solemnised so far under the scheme, said the minister.
