In the wake of mysterious deaths of persons linked to the professional examination board (PEB) scam, the Congress on Saturday claimed that the lives of other accused were also under threat, including that of the main accused who is in jail.
The party also said that former minister Laxmikant Sharma may also be attacked or “eliminated”.
“Apart from former minister Laxmikant Sharma, those with threats to their lives include OP Shukla, Sudhir Sharma and ex-officials of PEB — Pankaj Trivedi, OP Shukla and Nitin Mahindra — who are involved in the scam and are in jail,” said KK Mishra, MP Congress chief spokesperson.
“Those linked to PEB scam have been dying mysteriously and hence, all these people, apart from DMAT official Yogesh Uprit, may also be targeted,” he added.
Reacting to the Congress’ statement, senior BJP leader and higher education minister Umashankar Gupta said, “The state government views the deaths of those linked to PEB scam seriously and said there should be a probe into these deaths.”
Responding to claims that the special task force (STF) officials have also said that they have been threatened, Gupta said that if that was true they would be provided adequate security.
On Friday agencies reported that two senior STF officials had written to Special Investigation Team (SIT) monitoring the PEB scam probe claiming that they had received threats and sought protection.
To questions on whether the deaths and threats to suspects and investigators warranted a CBI probe, the minister asked, “How is a person’s security to a person linked to CBI probe?”
