A 26-year-old man allegedly assaulted his two-month-old son in a fit of rage after a quarrel with his wife, in a case reported from Banganga in TT Nagar late on Monday evening.

The child was taken to the hospital where officials said his condition was critical.

The incident occurred as the accused — identified as Shahnawaz Khan — tried to get his wife Sameena to return to their marital home in Vidisha, police said on the basis of the woman’s complaint.

According to police, Sameena had recently come to Bhopal to stay with her parents, having told her husband she would return in a day or two. But when she didn't, Shahnawaz, she claimed, came to her house and had an argument with her. It was then that he first throttled the baby, slammed it on the ground and then left.

The woman approached the police on Tuesday after the child was admitted to hospital on Monday. Police say the suspect – who has been booked for assault and attempted murder — is yet to be arrested.
