A 25-year-old burglar who robbed houses with the help of tantra (occult) has been arrested in Betul district.

The burglar, identified as Rahul Gond -- a native of Betul district -- was arrested on Friday evening along with four aides -- identified Chaitu Uike, Rahul Dhurve, Vikas Pandram and Nitin Uike -- with booty worth Rs 3 lakh.

Gond used tribal tantra to induce sleep among residents of houses before he looted valuables.

“During interrogation, Rahul revealed he was a disciple of a tribal tantric Malku who lives in adjoining Maharashtra. From Malku, he learnt how to perform tantric rituals with the remains of litters on which dead unmarried men and women were taken for cremation,” Betul superintendent of police Rakesh Jain said on Saturday.

Gond said the remains of the litters were used to perform rituals on purnima (full moon night) at cremation grounds. The wooden remains were then used to make a cross outside the house which was to be burgled. The wooden cross induced uninterrupted sleep to those inside the house, the Betul SP added.

Gond admitted to committing at least eight burglaries in houses located at Tikari, Gauthana and Mahadgaon areas of Betul over the last one month.
