State transport minister on Wednesday tried to show the mirror to the transport authorities by revealing how touts recently surrounded him at a regional transport office (RTO).

Stressing that people were falling prey to the tout menace and ending up paying Rs 300 instead of Rs 30 for getting a duplicate registration certificate, the minister directed the officials to get cracking.

Speaking during the state road safety council meeting, under way to discuss ways to contain increasing number of road accidents, transport minister Durga Prasad Yadav stunned transport officials by disclosing that touts were still active in RTO offices and were even helping ineligible candidates procure a driving licence.

When officials tried to convince the minister by arguing that computerisation of operations have restricted the role of such touts, the minister revealed how he was surrounded by touts when he visited an RTO office recently.

A public representative, who was present in the meeting, substantiated the charge by claiming that touts in Azamgarh were charging Rs 600 for getting a driving licence issued as against Rs 60, the prescribed fee.

“I did raised the issue and even directed officers to ensure that they are dealt with,” the minister told the HT.

Presiding over the meeting, Yadav expressed concern over the data, which says UP, was the leading state in number of accident related deaths.

Laying stress on awareness on road safety, he asked secondary education department officers to include chapter of road safety in books.

Transport commissioner Rajnish Gupta said a hi-tech driving training school was proposed to be set up at Rae Bareli with the central government’s assistance.
Some participants suggested that the limit of compensation amount in road accident deaths be suitably increased.

Minister of state for transport Man Pal Singh Verma, Mahboob Ali principal secretary, home, RM Srivastav and ADG, traffic, AKD Dwivedi were also present in the meeting.
