The man whose alleged kidnapping prompted his wife and two sons to attempt suicide at the police headquarters in Bhopal was found on Tuesday in Misrod, on the outskirts of Bhopal.
A police team spotted Ramcharan on Hoshangabad road on Tuesday evening when he was coming towards Bhopal, police officers said. Subsequently, Ramcharan was caught and taken to Misrod police station.
Ramcharan told police that he was coming from Timarni to Bhopal on foot. "He said he was in Nagpur and later came to Timarani via train. As he lost all money, he decided to come to Bhopal on foot. However, his statement is suspicious. We are still interrogating him to establish motive behind fleeing away from home," said sub-divisional officer of police Shanu Aftab Ali.
According to sources, Ramcharan, a resident of Nazirabad, had gone ‘missing’ on August 6. He first went to Hoshangabad and spent a few days there, and later went to Harda.
Thereafter, he went to Gwalior, from where he contacted a local journalist and informed about himself. The journalist, however, informed police about it. Later, Ramcharan went to Khandwa and then Nagpur.
"He said he had a dispute with panchayat secretary Jitendra Srivastava over an issue. Following fight, he feared that he might be killed, so he fled away," said a police officer.
On Saturday, Ramcharan’s wife Baby, two sons Sanjay and Sunil had come to PHQ and consumed some poisonous substance, accusing the police of not taking action on their complaint. They were later rushed to Hamidia Hospital.
The family members had alleged that Ramcharan, a former sarpanch and RTI activist, was kidnapped by the panchayat secretary. Director general of police (DGP) Nandan Dubey had subsequently handed over the case to CID and instructed the local police to intensify the search for Ramcharan.
