A mob killed a bear after it attacked a man near Gol village, 12 kms from Bhopal during an ongoing rescue operation of the animal on Thursday.
Forest department staff was present at the spot but found themselves helpless and did not intervene to stop the mob, led by the brother of the victim, from lynching the bear.
Rai Singh Tomar, 22, was killed after he was attacked by a sloth bear on Wednesday near Gol village. His relatives, Ramchandra, Lal Singh and Mohan Singh, who tried to rescue him from the bear were also injured in the process.
CCF, Bhopal, SS Rajput told HT the rescue squad of Van Vihar reached Gol village to tranquilize the bear. An irate mob also collected at the spot and attacked the bear with rods and sticks and killed it.
Sources said that after the rescue squad located the bear in the forests near Gol, a tranquilizer dart was hit on the bear after which it became sedated. Just then, the brother of Rai Singh Tomar led a mob that killed the bear.
SS Rajput said that he has sought a report of the incident from the Samardha range staff that was present there.
"I have asked for identification of the people who led the mob and killed the bear. Once they are identified we can proceed with booking them under the Wildlife Protection Act," he said.
Meanwhile, the forest department also announced a compensation of Rs 1.50 lakh for the next of kin who died on Wednesday.
The dead body of the bear was brought to the Kerwa nursery where post mortem was conducted. The bear was cremated at Kerwa after the post mortem.
