Ten people were killed and at least 15 left injured after an SUV collided with a speeding truck near Chandesari village, eight kilometres from here, on the two-lane Ujjain-Dewas state highway on Saturday morning.

“The mini truck was carrying 30 people and the people who got killed are four women, three men, three kids and a pregnant woman,” district hospital doctor Jitendra Sharma said.

“Nine people were brought dead and the pregnant woman’s health was deteriorating. Three are critical and have been referred to a hospital in Indore for further treatment,” he added.

The bodies of the deceased lay scattered around the accident site due to the impact. According to sources, the victims were mostly labourers from Rajasthan, who were going to Dewas to work as farm labourers.

Ujjain district collector Sanket Bhondve said that the injured had been admitted to the district hospital. The condition of four is said to be critical. Financial assistance will be given according to norms, he added.

Last week, eight people had died in a similar accident on Agar Road.
