Three police constables were suspended on Wednesday for allegedly beating a policeman and a private security guard in the district hospital at Chhindwara.
Police constables Hariram Tumdan, his brother Naresh Tumdan and Ashok Uvnati, were suspended for beating police post head constable Santlal Verma and private security guard Prem Singh Patel, the police said.
The constables, who were in plain clothes, went to the district hospital on Tuesday night for treatment of a relative. The constables searched for the stretcher and when they did not get it, they asked the on-duty security guard for it.
The security guard was unable to arrange the stretcher after which the trio started shouting at him and beat him up, the police said.
The head constable, manning the police post of the hospital, went to spot but the three constables — who were in an inebriated state — manhandled him also and tore his uniform.
Some onlookers tried to intervene, but the constables misbehaved with them too. The three were beaten up by the locals later.
Police officials from Kotwali police rushed to the spot and got the three constables examined at the hospital where it was confirmed that they were drunk.
Chhindwara superintendent of police GK Pathak told HT, “The three constables have been suspended for manhandling.”
