A 75-year-old retired professor was accused of sexually assaulting and molesting at least 12 inmates of a girls home in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri, about 100 km south of Gwalior.
The accused, KN Agrawal, is absconding.
His daughter, Shaila Agrawal, who runs the home, has been arrested. The hostel was being run from a two-storied house owned by the family.
A team of officials of the state women and child development (WCD) department, on receiving a complaint, investigated the case and reported Agrawal had raped four girls and molested eight others in the last couple of months.
The WCD officials corroborated facts and recorded the statements of the girls on Wednesday, and recommended immediate action.
An FIR was lodged by child welfare officer Sarita Shukla and the hostel was sealed. A detailed report has been submitted to the district collector, WCD regional coordinator Suresh Tomar said.
The girls are aged between 12 and 18. The four girls who were allegedly raped underwent medical examination in a government hospital on Thursday.
All the girls have been shifted to a tribal girls’ hostel and will later be transferred to a home in Ujjain, officials said.
Kotwali town inspector Sanjay Mishra said cases have been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Child from Sexual Offence.
