Madhya Pradesh Congress vice-president Manak Agarwal resigned from his post on Thursday following difference with the party over ticket distribution for the ensuing civic polls in the state.

Agarwal was upset that some of his supporters in Itarsi and Hoshangabad municipal councils were denied tickets by the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC).

The senior Congress leader had proposed the name of Pramila Goyal for the post of Itarsi municipal council chairperson, which is reserved for women in the civic body.

On the other hand, Women Congress national president Shobha Oza wanted a ticket for Madhavi Mishra.

The ticket was earlier awarded to Goyal but on Wednesday, the candidate was changed and Madhavi Mishra got the ticket following which Agarwal resigned from the party post.

Agarwal said candidates, who enjoyed “grass-root support” were not given ticket and pressure was used to change the names of candidates.

"Two days back, I was promised that the ticket would be given to a candidate but later, I find that someone else is being given ticket,” Agarwal told Hindustan Times.

"If word is not kept in politics, what's left?"

Agarwal blamed former MP Suresh Pachouri and Oza for changing the candidates backed by him.

"The tickets are being given under pressure from Suresh Pachouri and Shobha Oza," he said.

Agarwal, however, said that he did not have any complaint against other senior leaders.

"The PCC chief Arun Yadav is doing a good job," he said.

Senior Congress leader and former MP Sajjan Singh Verma, the party’s in-charge for the civic polls said Agrawal’s resignation was unfortunate.

Agarwal would be pacified, Verma said.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders close to Pachouri have urged the PCC chief to take disciplinary action against Agarwal and expel him from the party.

Civic elections in Madhya Pradesh are scheduled to take place in two phases - on November 28 and December 02.
