A couple from MP’s Morena district jumped off a bridge into the Chambal after throwing their two children into the river at a spot near Madhya Pradesh-Uttar Pradesh border, police said on Wednesday.
Manoj Singh, 30, and his wife Jyoti, 27, along with their seven-year-old son Prince and four-year-old daughter Ritika were seen around 6 pm on Tuesday at the Chambal bridge connecting Bhind district with Etawah district of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, police said.
A diary left on the bridge revealed the identity of Manoj, a resident of Jagpura village in Morena district.
Bhind superintendent of police Navneet Bhasin said onlookers saw the couple had a tiff, after which they stepped down from their motorbike and walked to the bridge. Midway through the bridge, the couple hurled their children into the river and then followed suit by jumping off the bridge.
“Etawah police rushed to the spot and divers searched the river for the four people. But the family remained untraceable till Wednesday evening. We’re coordinating with Morena police to contact the kin of the family. We are trying to figure out the reason behind the extreme step, while efforts to find the missing four are still underway,” added Bhasin.
