Three persons, including a woman and her minor daughter, were killed and three others injured after a cylinder used to fill balloons exploded in a fair at village Bhatekhari in district Seoni on Friday.
Suman Bai (40) and Sangeeta (12) were killed on the spot as they were standing close to the cylinder. Another person Ramesh Dineshwar (47) died during treatment at the hospital.
The injured were shifted to Nagpur for treatment from the district hospital, Seoni, after initial treatment. Prima facie it appears the cylinder exploded after the vendor selling balloons poured water on the caustic soda used to prepare gas, Barghat town inspector BS Gotharia said.
The vendor had a narrow escape, he said. The fair was organised in traditional manner after Diwali festival. The village falls in Barghat block of district Seoni. The district administration has ordered magisterial inquiry into the incident.
Sub divisional magistrate Sourabh Kumar will conduct the probe into the incident and submit his report within one week to the district collector.
The state government will provide ex-gratia compensation of `1 lakh to each of the deceased, while the district administration will provide `10,000 each to the deceased and `5,000 to each of the injured. Seoni district collector Bharat Yadav said the government will bear the cost of the treatment of the injured at Nagpur.
